Shoplifting prevention in retail – systems & solutions at a glance
Shoplifting causes immense damage to retailers every year. To protect themselves effectively against this, companies rely on modern merchandise security systems. But what exactly is merchandise security, what systems are available and how do they work? This article provides a comprehensive overview.
What does merchandise security mean?
Shoplifting refers to all measures and technical systems designed to prevent goods from being stolen from shops or warehouses without permission. The aim is to detect theft at an early stage or prevent it altogether – without impairing the customer’s shopping experience. A merchandise security system consists of several components, such as the merchandise security antenna. Depending on the width of the entrance, one or more columns/antennas can be used.
The counterpart to the merchandise security antennas are the security tags or labels. These are available in hard plastic for securing textiles, or in paper (RF) or plastic (AM) as stickers for securing cosmetics, DIY store items and many other products. The range of accessories is very large and in our shop you will find the right security option for every portfolio, or we will find it for you.

Why is merchandise security so important?
- Avoid financial losses: theft leads to high annual losses in the retail sector.
- Relieve employees: Security systems reduce the pressure on sales staff to monitor customers.
- Protect the customer experience: discreet security systems ensure a relaxed shopping experience.
How does merchandise security work?
- Securing the goods: Products are fitted with special labels or security tags.
- Detection: Sensors or antennas detect active security tags at exits.
- Alarm: If a secured product is removed from the shop without authorisation, an alarm is triggered.
How much does merchandise security cost?
The costs depend heavily on the type of system, the number of secured goods and the size of the store. Small starter packs are often available from a few hundred pounds, while professional complete solutions can cost several thousand pounds.

Acousto-magnetic article surveillance (AM article surveillance) is a high-precision technology for theft prevention that is used in particular in challenging environments. The system operates in the frequency range of approximately 58 kHz and uses acousto-magnetic resonance to reliably detect active security tags. When passing through the antenna zone, active tags send a resonance signal that is detected by the receivers. If the tag is not deactivated or removed, an alarm is automatically triggered.
Advantages of acousto-magnetic article surveillance:
Excellent detection accuracy
Particularly effective at wide or busy entrances.
Interference-resistant
Works reliably even in metal-containing environments.
High security
Low false alarm rate and high resistance to tampering attempts.
Flexibility
Supports the security of sensitive and high-value goods, even in difficult shop layouts.
Very small adhesive security tags
Which do not cover any text on the packaging
Many different designs of adhesive labels
Can also be used to secure metal objects
Plastic-free environmental labels available

Industry solutions for greater security in the salesroom
Merchandise security systems are used in all areas where goods are displayed openly. The retail trade quickly realised that goods displayed in showcases do not sell well, as customers are reluctant to give up their anonymity. If goods are displayed openly, they must be secured against theft. This takes place in the following areas, for example:
Clothing shops
By attaching hard tags to the clothing
Pharmacies
e.g. protection of high-priced cosmetic products with adhesive security tags
Opticians
Securing glasses using special glasses security devices that do not interfere with trying them on
